How to upload your power bill on a phone or tablet
A quick walk-through for iPhone, iPad, and Android
Got a power bill sitting in your email or your power company’s app? Here’s how to get it onto your phone and into Billy.
Before you start
- Billy needs a PDF. Photos and screenshots won’t work.
- A bill from the last three months works best.
- Most bills are sent by email or sit in your power company’s app or online account — that’s where to look first
On iPhone or iPad
Step 1: Save your bill to your phone:
If your bill is in an email
1. Open the email and tap the PDF attachment to open it.
2. Tap the share icon (a square with an arrow pointing up).
3. Tap Save to Files.
4. Choose Downloads (easiest to find later), then tap Save.
If your bill is in your power company’s app or website
1. Log in and find your latest bill or statement.
2. Open the PDF version of the bill.
3. Tap the share icon, then tap Save to Files and tap Save.
Step 2: Upload it to Billy
1. Open your usual browser and head to billy.govt.nz.
2. Tap Get started, then choose Upload your bill.
3. Tap the upload button. A pop-up will appear with a few options.
4. Choose Files, not Photo Library, which is for photos only.
5. Find your PDF. It’s likely in ‘Recent’ or ‘Downloads’.
6. Tap the PDF. Billy will take it from there.
Tip: Can’t see your bill? Tap Browse at the bottom of the Files screen to look in iCloud Drive, your email app, or other folders.
On Android
Step 1: Save your bill to your phone:
If your bill is in an email
1. Open the email.
2. Tap the PDF attachment, or the download arrow next to it.
3. Tap Download (or Save). The file goes to your Downloads folder.
If your bill is in your power company’s app or website
1. Log in and find your latest bill.
2. Open the PDF version of the bill.
3. Tap the download icon (a downward arrow). The file saves to Downloads.
Step 2: Upload it to Billy
1. Open your usual browser and head to billy.govt.nz.
2. Tap Get started, then choose Upload your bill.
3. Tap the upload button. Your phone’s file picker will open.
4. If it opens to photos by default, tap the menu (three lines) in the top left, then choose Downloads or Internal storage.
5. Tap the PDF you want to use. Billy will take it from there.
Tip: Different Android phones use different file apps — Files by Google, Samsung My Files, and so on. The steps are much the same. You’re just looking for your Downloads folder.
If something’s not working
- Only PDFs work. If you only have a photo or screenshot, log in to your power company’s app or website and download the PDF version of your bill.
- File too large or won’t read? Try a different month’s bill, or re-upload the original PDF.
- Still stuck? You can answer a few quick questions about your home instead — Billy will give you a smart estimate that way. <insert hyperlink to q&a flow>
Don’t worry — your bill stays secure and private. Billy only uses it to give you a useful comparison.
